Saint Kitts and Nevis Sets Sail Towards Sustainable Energy Future
VANCOUVER, CANADA, 23 August 2023 [PMO]– Honourable Dr. Joyelle Clarke, Minister of Environment, Climate Action, and Constituency Empowerment, is spearheading transformative efforts in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to revolutionize the Energy Sector in St Kitts and Nevis.
In a landmark meeting held on August 22, 2023, at the Seventh Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Minister Clarke joined forces with Asher Lessels, Task Manager for GEF’s Mitigation Projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. Their discussions centered around the ambitious “GEF-7 National Project: Achieving Rapid Decarbonization of the Energy Sector in Saint Kitts and Nevis,” which received approval from the GEF CEO on May 11, 2023.
This groundbreaking project aims to transition the nation towards 100% renewable electricity generation and elevate the energy efficiency of public buildings to new heights.
Key Highlights:
· Inter-Ministerial Collaboration: Minister Clarke and Mr Lessels emphasized the crucial role of inter-ministerial collaboration, bringing together the Ministries of Energy, Environment, and Finance. This holistic approach ensures a comprehensive and effective execution of the project.
· Project Steering Committee: To kickstart the project, immediate efforts will be directed towards establishing a dedicated project manager and project steering committee, a vital step in driving the project’s success.
Saint Kitts and Nevis is boldly charting its course towards a sustainable future. This project aligns perfectly with the nation’s vision to be among the first Caribbean countries to achieve a net-zero emission electricity grid, propelling it toward becoming a Sustainable Island State.
