PUBLIC WORKS WEEK OBSERVED TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF HOW PUBLIC WORKS CONNECT THE WORLD
Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 24, 2023 (SKNIS): The Ministry of Public Infrastructure is observing Public Works Weeks from May 21-27 to increase awareness across the St. Kitts and Nevis of the importance of public works and to celebrate a group of extremely hardworking and talented workers who have shown remarkable dedication to serving the general public.
The week-long observation is celebrated under the theme “Connecting the World through Public Works.”
“How do we connect the world through public works? We do it through infrastructure – we build and maintain roads and bridges. Also, in ‘Connecting the World through Public Works’ we actually maintain the hospitals and community centers,” said George Gilbert, Director of the Public Works Department, during his May 24 appearance on ‘Infocus.’ So, without this kind of interaction and interfacing, it means that there would be no roads to traverse on, [no hospitals to go to] and no community centers to [use].”
Director Gilbert said that a week of activities is planned aimed at affording the workers to “come together to socialize.” He said the week is also set aside to bring awareness to how essential the Public Works Department is.
The week opened with a church service on Sunday, May 21. Monday, May 22 was designated as give back day where staff went out into the community to present care packages to past staff.
“There are some people who would have worked at Public Works many years ago and are at home; so what we did was ask the staff to bring dry goods. We made some packages and took them to the individuals. We identified one person from each division, went out and gave them the food packages,” said the Director.
Tuesday, May 23 was set aside for a staff exchange where mechanics from Nevis Public Works journeyed to St. Kitts for the Day and vice versa, to work. A movie is scheduled for the evening of May 24, another socializing event for staff. On Thursday, May 25, staff will engage in a Health and Wellness Day at the PWD Division in the morning, while a health walk is set for the afternoon. Staff will come together on May 26 for divisional cleaning, while the week climaxes on May 27 with a fun and sports day at the Conaree Playing Field.
The general public is invited to take part in the activities scheduled from May 25-27.
