PRIME MINISTER HARRIS PRESENTS $847 MILLION BUDGET THAT WILL PUT THE FEDERATION’S ECONOMY BACK ON TRACK
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 14, 2022 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris has laid before the National Assembly the Appropriation (2022) Bill, 2021, of approximately EC$847,875,272 million to maintain the delivery of public services and put the Federation’s economy back on track.
The Bill was presented at a Sitting of the National Assembly held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort’s Ballroom today, Tuesday, December 14, 2021.
The Appropriation (2022) Bill, 2021 is a Bill to provide for the services of Saint Christopher and Nevis for the financial year commencing 1st January, 2022and ending on 31st December, 2022.
The budgetary allocations will cover some twenty-two (22) expenditure heads including the Governor General, Parliament, Audit Office, Justice and Legal Affairs, Office of the Prime Minister, Education, Health, Agriculture, among others.
Prime Minister Harris indicated that this Budget, presented under the theme ‘Investing in our People: Putting St. Kitts and Nevis Back on Track’, is designed to further enhance the quality of life of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“Mr. Speaker, the proposed allocations would not only assist the Government to maintain its heavy investment in our people but will help to build resilience in our response to the pandemic and put our country of St. Kitts and Nevis back on track to becoming a model small island state,” the prime minister said.
Dr. Harris continued, “Our proposals for Capital Expenditure will make a significant contribution to our economic recovery by creating jobs and more jobs and moving our country closer to full recovery. We are taking a cautiously optimistic outlook for the fiscal year 2022 and therefore with these proposals, we are setting the wheels in motion to advance our plans for putting St. Kitts and Nevis back on track.”
Tuesday’s presentation of the Budget was witnessed by a wide cross section of society, including senior Government officials, representatives from the corporate community, the diplomatic and consular corps and members of the media.
The Sitting of the National Assembly will continue on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at the National Assembly Chambers at Government Headquarters.
