Back-to-School Voucher Brings Timely Relief and Greater Peace of Mind to Families Ahead of New School Year
Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 19th 2026 (PMO) – For parents across St. Kitts and Nevis, the weeks leading into a new school year often come with excitement for their children, but also the financial responsibility of purchasing uniforms, shoes, books, stationery and other essential supplies.
This year, thousands of families are preparing for the 2026–2027 academic year with the added support of the Government’s 2026 Back-to-School Voucher Programme, which provides EC$250 for every eligible child enrolled in a registered educational institution across the Federation.
The programme is designed to ease some of the financial pressure associated with preparing children for school and, importantly, to give parents greater peace of mind at a time when household budgets are already being stretched by elevated prices and other living expenses.
Eligible students attending licensed pre-schools, primary schools, secondary schools and tertiary institutions can benefit from the initiative. Applications opened on August 17 and will remain open until December 31, 2026.
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance M. Drew said the initiative is rooted in the Government’s understanding of the real pressures confronting families.
“In these challenging global times, marked by persistent inflation and rising costs, our Government remains resolute in our mission to ease the burden on our families. The 2026 Back-to-School Voucher Programme is more than just financial assistance; it is a clear signal that we stand with our parents and guardians as they invest in the education of our children, the very architects of our Nation’s future,” Prime Minister Drew said.
For a household with one eligible child, the programme represents EC$250 towards school-related expenses. For a household preparing three eligible children for the new academic year, that assistance could amount to EC$750.
Behind those numbers are families making everyday decisions about how best to stretch their resources.
The 2026 programme is accompanied by additional Government measures specifically timed to help families prepare for the new academic year. These include duty-free concessions on eligible school supplies through September 30 and two Discounted VAT Rate Days on August 28 and 29.
As the Federation moves closer to the opening of the new academic year, the Government has reaffirmed that its focus extends beyond getting students back into classrooms. It is also about helping to ensure that children arrive ready to learn, parents feel supported, and families can begin the school year with greater confidence, optimism and financial breathing room.
