Kelvon Dickenson Convicted of 2023 Murder of Jermaine “Shorty” Jules 

Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis — Kelvon Dickenson of St. Paul’s has been convicted by a majority  verdict of 10-2, on May 18, 2026 for the murder of Jermaine “Shorty” Jules, stemming from a fatal  shooting that occurred on July 19, 2023 in St. Paul’s. 

Jermaine Jules, 29, of Grove Village, St. Paul’s, was fatally shot while walking along Rawlins Road , St  Paul’s. Jules was shot twice, once in the shoulder and once in the head and succumbed to his injuries  at the scene. The case was prosecuted by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Adlai Smith and Ms.  Azuree Liburd while Dickenson was defended by Mr. Chesley Hamilton. 

The prosecution relied on CCTV footage of Dickenson at the scene together with an eye witness who  witnessed the shooting at close range. Dickenson gave evidence in his own defence and acknowledged that while he was on Rawlins Avenue at the time of the shooting and heard the fatal shots he did not kill the deceased.  

Dickenson, of Lover’s Lane, St. Paul’s, was formally charged with the offence on August 5, 2023 and  the trial before a judge and jury commenced on May 11, 2026. Jurors deliberated for several hours  before returning with their verdict.  

The sentencing hearing for Dickenson is fixed for July 10, 2026 as Mr. Hamilton asked for a pre sentence report to be prepared on his client. Both the prosecution and defence will also have to file  their arguments for the sentencing hearing before the end of June 2026. 

The maximum penalty for murder is life imprisonment and the Eastern Caribbean Sentencing Guideline  for Murder provides that a murder involving the use of a firearm usually attracts a starting point of 40 years’ imprisonment with a sentencing range of 30 to 50 years’ imprisonment.
