St. Kitts and Nevis Permanent Mission to the United Nations engages with Jordan’s candidate for the International Court of Justice
United Nations, New York (26 th February 2025) – H.E. Dr. Mutryce Williams, Permanent
Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations met with her counterpart H.E Mr.
Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud, Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Hashemite
Kingdom of Jordan to the United Nations in New York. Their Excellencies discussed the
opportunities to boost bilateral ties and engaged on Jordan’s candidature to fill the open
seat on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at the election to be held in New York in
May, following the resignation of Judge Nawaf Sallam.
The International Court of Justice, headquartered in The Hague, the Netherlands, is the
principal judicial organ of the United Nations. According to the ICJ, “Article 33 of the
United Nations Charter lists the following methods for the pacific settlement of disputes
between States: negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial
settlement, and resort to regional agencies or arrangements, to which should also be
added good offices.”
In commenting on the meeting and St. Kitts and Nevis’s posture, Dr. Williams asserted
that, “as the multilateral order undergoes severe stress due to geopolitics, St. Kitts and
Nevis believes in upholding internation law, and we remain committed to playing our
role at the United Nations to ensure persons of high esteem and intellect sit on the court
who uphold the principles of equity.”
Both teams discussed the role of the international judicial body in issuing advisory
opinions with respect to climate change and further discussed bilateral engagement as
it relates to the desertification and access to water for sustaining lives and livelihoods –
an issue at the fore front of the Prime Minister’s Sustainable Island State Agenda 2040.
