SAINT KITTS AND NEVIS REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO STRONGER CELAC-EU PARTNERSHIP

New York, USA, September 23, 2026 (SKNIS): Saint Kitts and Nevis has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU), during the CELAC-EU Ministerial Meeting held on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York.

The Federation was represented by the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, who welcomed the adoption of the 2025–2027 Roadmap and underscored the importance of stronger international cooperation in addressing shared global challenges.

“Saint Kitts and Nevis treasures the CELAC-EU relationship. We have been linked throughout history and we recognise that without cooperation, there is no real global development,” Dr. Douglas said.

During his intervention, Dr. Douglas highlighted digitisation and cybersecurity as key areas for closer cooperation, particularly for Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He also reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to maintaining the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, emphasising the importance of cooperation and collaboration in preserving regional stability.

With regards to climate change, Dr. Douglas drew attention to the vulnerability of Caribbean nations to increasingly severe weather events and the need for meaningful action to reduce emissions.

“We know climate change is real, no matter what is said out there. We feel it, we see it,” said Dr. Douglas. “Every year for six (6) months our populations watch and wait in anxiety. We cannot allow this to get worse. We must reduce our emissions. It is for our own survival.”

According to Dr. Douglas, Saint Kitts and Nevis will continue to support stronger CELAC-EU cooperation as a means of advancing shared priorities and addressing challenges that require collective international action.
