Prime Minister Drew Calls for Climate Justice and Community-led Solutions at Climate Mobility Forum in Berlin, Germany
Berlin, Germany, June 18, 2026 (PMO) – Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, joined fellow Heads of State and Government from across the globe today, June 18th, at the opening of the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum, where he delivered a compelling call for climate justice, meaningful partnerships, and greater inclusion of local communities in shaping climate solutions.
Prime Minister Drew participated in the High-Level Exchange on the Climate Mobility Principles, alongside leaders from Palau, the Marshall Islands, Honduras, Tuvalu, and the Maldives. The session was convened by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) in collaboration with the Robert Bosch Stiftung and focused on advancing global consensus around climate mobility and adaptation.
Addressing an audience of international policymakers, development partners, climate experts, and civil society representatives, Prime Minister Drew emphasized that climate change is fundamentally a matter of justice, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) that contribute minimally to global emissions yet bear some of the most severe consequences.
Using the example of a Caribbean fisherman whose livelihood is increasingly threatened by rising sea temperatures and changing marine ecosystems, Dr. Drew highlighted the disproportionate burden being carried by vulnerable nations.
“We are not seeking charity, we are not seeking pity. We are seeking justice and partnership, which are fundamental to dealing with these issues,” the Prime Minister stated.
Prime Minister Drew noted that climate mobility must not be viewed as a failure of resilience, but rather as an opportunity to preserve dignity, livelihoods, and communities in the face of an escalating global crisis. He stressed that while international expertise and support are important, lasting solutions must be rooted in local knowledge and local realities.
Drawing on a real-world example from the Caribbean, Dr. Drew recounted how an externally driven recommendation nearly overlooked a critical cultural and economic reality because local stakeholders were not adequately consulted. The lesson, he said, was clear.
“Hence, I strongly believe that anything that is to be done at the local level must involve local communities,” Prime Minister Drew said. “It will be considered arrogant to say that local people, who have been living there for hundreds of years, who had developed solutions, and who had adapted to that climate and who had local solutions to any issue, that would be our good enough to include them in your solution.”
Hon. Drew further underscored that effective climate mobility policies must safeguard identity, culture, livelihoods, and human rights while strengthening national resilience and security. He praised the Global Centre for Climate Mobility for its partnership with vulnerable countries, including St. Kitts and Nevis, particularly through initiatives that support community adaptation and locally driven climate responses.
Dr. Drew also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the GCCM and local stakeholders in Nevis as an example of how global partnerships can successfully support community-led adaptation efforts. He noted that climate financing must be better aligned with local needs and priorities to ensure that vulnerable communities are empowered rather than displaced by climate challenges.
Reaffirming St. Kitts and Nevis’ commitment to international cooperation on climate action, the Prime Minister called for greater global solidarity in addressing one of the defining challenges of our time. “It is partnerships like these that keep me optimistic, that keep me hopeful. Partnerships like these tell us what is possible. We just have to work together.”
