“OUR STUDENTS DESERVE THIS SCHOOL,” SAYS DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER HANLEY AS GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT TO DELIVER BASSETERRE HIGH SCHOOL
Basseterre, Saint Kitts, March 30, 2026 (SKNIS): Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to delivering the long-awaited Basseterre High School, emphasising that the nation’s students deserve a modern, fully equipped learning environment.
Speaking at the Prime Minister’s Press Conference with Cabinet Ministers on March 30, 2026, Dr. Hanley made it clear that despite external criticisms and distractions, the government remains focused on fulfilling its promise to the people.
“The students deserve this school, and we have given the commitment that we are going to deliver a school, and that is exactly what we are doing,” the education minister said.
Dr. Hanley also underscored that while visible construction may appear gradual, substantial foundational work has already been completed behind the scenes, placing the project firmly on track.
“Much work has already been put in place even before we get to see a piece of steel… and from all reports, the project is on its way,” he said.
He also highlighted the strong economic impact of the project, noting that approximately 90 percent of workers will come from within the Federation, benefiting a wide cross-section of skilled and service-based professionals.
“Our skilled workers, our plumbers, our electricians, our labourers, our AC technicians, our heavy equipment operators, even our food vendors—all of these persons are bound to benefit,” Deputy Prime Minister Hanley added.
The new Basseterre High School will be a climate-resilient, turnkey facility, fully outfitted with classrooms, labs, and equipment upon completion, providing a modern and unified learning environment for students and teachers.
Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, supported these remarks, pointing out that the previous administration failed to deliver the school despite seven years in office and significant expenditure.

“They spent $21 million, and not one brick laid… And they had seven years,” Prime Minister Drew said, while emphasising that the current administration has made tangible progress in a shorter timeframe, and remains committed to completing the project for the benefit of the nation’s students.
“In less than half the time, this administration had already made significant moves… and now, we are at the verge of delivering the Basseterre High School.”
The government maintains that the project is both an investment in education and a driver of local economic activity, ensuring that citizens directly benefit while delivering a modern school for future generations.
