Government Responds Decisively to Global Oil Price Pressures

Basseterre, Saint Kitts, March 18, 2026 (PMO) – The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is actively taking measures to cushion the impact of rising global oil prices while accelerating efforts to achieve long-term energy independence.

Addressing the issue recently the Prime Minister explained that the increase in oil prices is driven by international conflicts beyond the country’s control. Adding that despite global pressures, the Government continues to provide direct relief to citizens through targeted subsidies.

“We are recognizing that these wars are taking place over which we have absolutely no control. Oil prices going sky high, and we are not involved in a war. These are the repercussions that we suffer because of decisions by others. As you know, we continue to support and subsidize, for example, a tank of gas. We subsidize that significantly. It’s still at $30… even when the prices go up, we have maintain our tanker gas at $30,” the Prime Minister said. 

Dr. Drew also noted that the Government is closely monitoring fuel prices at the pump and will continue to assess additional measures to ease the burden on households.

At the same time, the Government is advancing its Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA), with a strong focus on renewable energy.

“One of the fundamental pillars is energy… renewable energy… it’s very important that we become energy independent, so that we are not so vulnerable to the fluctuations in oil prices,” he emphasized. 

The Prime Minister highlighted ongoing initiatives, including plans for a 50-megawatt solar plant and progress on geothermal energy development, which together represent a transformative shift toward energy security and sustainability.

He encouraged citizens to adopt energy conservation practices while the Government continues to implement both short-term relief and long-term solutions.
