Saint Kitts and Nevis and Romania Lead Key UN Deliberation Ahead of Selection of Next Secretary-General

United Nations, New York, (9th March 2026) – The Working Group on the Strengthening and Revitalizing of the Work of the General Assembly convened a focused deliberation on the process for the selection of the next UN Secretary-General and the Office of the President ofthe General Assembly on Thursday, 5 March 2026 in the Trusteeship Council Chamber. The session was chaired by H.E. Mutryce Williams, Permanent Representative of Saint Kitts and Nevis to the UN, and H.E. Cornel Feruță, Permanent Representative of Romania to the UN, highlighting their leadership in guiding Member States through this important process.

The deliberation focused on the key principles outlined in resolution 79/327, emphasizing the Secretary-General’s vital role in addressing global challenges and implementing the UN’s three pillars. Member States underscored the need for candidates to demonstrate efficiency, competence, integrity, and a strong commitment to the UN Charter. Delegations also highlighted the importance of promoting gender equality in nominations, as no woman has yet held the office.

Other key elements discussed included the submission of vision statements, transparency in campaign funding, procedures for candidate withdrawal, and the final appointment by the General Assembly upon the Security Council’s recommendation.

The deliberation further addressed measures to strengthen the Office of the President of the General Assembly, including supporting its growing workload, enhancing accountability, and promoting institutional memory.

This session marks a critical milestone as the UN prepares to select its next Secretary-General later this year, ensuring a transparent, inclusive, and effective process.
