Prime Minister Warns: “A Destabilized Cuba Will Destabilize All of Us”
Basseterre, Saint Kitts, February 25, 2026 (PMO) CARICOM Chairman and Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, issued a solemn and urgent appeal for regional attention to the humanitarian situation in Cuba during his feature address at the Opening Ceremony of the 50th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), February 24th.
In one of the most poignant moments of the evening, Prime Minister Drew warned of the broader regional implications of instability in Cuba. “A destabilized Cuba will definitely affect the whole region. A destabilized Cuba will destabilize all of us,” he stated.
The Chairman emphasized that the Caribbean’s interconnected geography and shared social, economic, and migratory realities mean that significant upheaval in any one state inevitably reverberates across the Community. He noted that Cuba’s population alone exceeds that of the remaining CARICOM states combined, underscoring the scale and potential impact of further destabilization.
Drawing on deeply personal experience, Prime Minister Drew expressed, “I studied in Cuba. I lived in Cuba for seven years.” He shared that he remains in contact with friends and individuals he considers family, many of whom continue to communicate the hardships they are facing. “Food has become terribly scarce… access to water has been challenging… houses without electricity,” he revealed, describing the humanitarian realities conveyed to him through calls and messages.
While clearly stating that he does not engage in the domestic politics of Cuba, the Chairman stressed that the humanitarian dimension of the situation demands principled and coordinated regional attention. “I do not get involved in their politics, but as a matter of humanity, it is challenging. It is important that the community looks at the humanitarian issue in Cuba and treats it extremely seriously.”
Dr. Drew urged the Community to act collectively, not only to explore avenues for direct humanitarian support, but also to serve as a conduit for communication and dialogue among relevant stakeholders to ensure the best possible outcome for the Cuban people and the wider region.
He framed the issue within the broader theme of togetherness that anchored his address, reiterating that regional solidarity must extend beyond rhetoric to practical coordination, especially in moments of difficulty.
As the Caribbean marks the 50th Regular Meeting of CARICOM, Chairman Drew’s remarks serve as a reminder that the region’s strength lies not only in shared history, but in shared responsibility.
