Official Commissioning Ceremony of the Basseterre Desalination Plant

Basseterre, Saint Kitts — The Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities is pleased to announce the official commissioning ceremony of the Basseterre Desalination Plant, a landmark infrastructure project designed to significantly strengthen water security for Basseterre and surrounding communities.

The commissioning ceremony will be held on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, at 9:00 am at the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Park, marking the transition of the facility from construction and testing to full operational status.

The plant is designed to produce up to two million gallons of potable water per day, utilising reverse osmosis technology to provide a reliable and climate-resilient water supply.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy, Utilities and Domestic Transport, Hon. Konris Maynard, described the commissioning as a major achievement for the Federation.

“The plant represents a critical investment in our national infrastructure and is a tangible demonstration of the Government’s decisive action to address long-standing water challenges in the capital,” Minister Maynard said.

“Its commissioning signals the completion of a key phase in an ambitious undertaking involving multiple stakeholders and partners, aimed at restoring potable water service in Basseterre to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“This is a celebratory moment for the Water Services Department, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, our partners, and every citizen of the Federation.”

The Minister further underscored the strategic importance of the facility in the context of climate resilience and growing demand.

“As climate variability continues to impact traditional water sources, desalination offers a dependable alternative. This plant strengthens our capacity to meet current demand while positioning Basseterre for future growth.”

The project was implemented under the direction of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure in collaboration with the Water Services Department and key technical partners, including Royal Utilities Ltd., with funding provided by the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Comprehensive testing has been completed to ensure that the facility meets all required operational and water quality standards ahead of commissioning.

The Basseterre Desalination Plant forms part of the Government’s broader Sustainable Island State Agenda, which seeks to enhance infrastructure resilience, safeguard public health, and ensure equitable access to essential services.

Once fully operational, the facility is expected to significantly reduce water interruptions and expand 24-hour potable water service to households and businesses within the Basseterre area.
