SENIOR MINISTER DR. DOUGLAS HIGHLIGHTS 2024 ACHIEVEMENTS AND STRATEGIC VISION FOR 2025

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 20, 2024 (SKNIS):  The Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development and Investment, delivered a powerful address highlighting the government’s significant accomplishments in 2024, and presenting a bold vision for 2025. His remarks, made during his support of the 2025 Budget Debate on Friday, December 20, 2024, outlined a clear roadmap for continued progress and prosperity for St. Kitts and Nevis.

In 2024, St. Kitts and Nevis made significant strides in enhancing international trade relations, including the completion of capacity-building programmes to implement the CARIFORUM-UK EPA, which opened new opportunities for businesses. The government also engaged key international partners, such as Afreximbank, United Nations Industrial Development Corporations (UNIDO), and India, paving the way for foreign investment and economic diversification. Additionally, regional trade consultations within the OECS helped advance the free movement of goods.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs launched critical consumer protection measures, including weekly market surveillance to prevent price gouging and ensure the safety of goods. The Consumer Protection Act (2023), was enacted to safeguard consumer rights and promote ethical business practices.

The Bureau of Standards achieved accreditation for air quality testing and completed 104 tests, ensuring public health and safety. Advanced laboratory equipment, including the Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GCMS), was acquired to monitor food quality, and regional training initiatives were implemented for local producers.

Dr. Douglas outlined ambitious plans to drive economic growth and resilience in 2025. Key priorities include the diversification of trade opportunities, promoting regional integration, empowering local manufacturers and exporters, and strengthening consumer protection measures through new legislation. Additionally, the Bureau of Standards will expand its accreditation and testing capabilities to ensure quality assurance and public safety.

Senior Minister Dr. Douglas said with a focus on sustainable development and economic transformation, the government remains committed to creating a resilient economy that benefits all citizens.
