Government Publishes Official Report on National Dialogue on Indoor Air Quality
SKNIS – Saint Kitts and Nevis, November 26, 2024 — The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has
officially published the report from the National Dialogue on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), held on 30 th
October 2024 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. Under the theme “Understanding the Challenges and
Finding Solutions,” the Dialogue brought together over 120 stakeholders, including experts from
environmental health, architecture, education, and technical fields, to address the pressing issue of
indoor air quality in public and private spaces.
Indoor air quality plays a crucial role in public health, particularly in mitigating the risks of respiratory
illnesses, cognitive impairments, and chronic diseases caused by pollutants such as mould, volatile
organic compounds (VOCs), and poor ventilation. These issues are exacerbated by climate change, with
rising temperatures and increased humidity creating conditions conducive to indoor pollution.
Cabinet Secretary Dr Marcus L Natta, who chaired the Dialogue, emphasized: “This Dialogue was a
pivotal step in our journey towards creating healthier indoor environments for all. As we combat the
effects of climate change, it is essential that we prioritize the quality of the air we breathe in our homes,
schools, and workplaces. This effort aligns with our nation’s Sustainable Island State Agenda.”
The published report outlines actionable recommendations, including the development of a National
Indoor Air Quality Policy, the adoption of sustainable building codes, public education campaigns, and
regular air quality monitoring in schools and healthcare facilities. These measures reflect the
Government’s resolute commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of citizens while
advancing climate resilience and sustainability.
To ensure the continuation of these efforts, a task force will be established in early 2025 to draft a
comprehensive IAQ policy, supported by experts in environmental health, HVAC systems, and building
standards.
The Government invites all citizens to access the report, available on the official website [https://www.gov.kn/], to
stay informed about this critical initiative and participate in ongoing efforts to improve indoor air quality
across the Federation.
