GOVERNMENT OF ST. KITTS AND NEVIS FULLY COMMITTED TO THE FIGHT AGAINST CRIME, ASSURES PRIME MINISTER DR. DREW

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, August 23, 2024 (SKNIS) – During a key stakeholder engagement session on Friday, August 23, 2024, with a wide cross section of society, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, gave the assurance that his government is fully committed to the fight against crime and maintaining citizen security.

“We have made significant investments in our National Security apparatus, allocating the largest budget for security in our nation’s history. We are providing our police force with the resources, training, and technology they need to combat crime effectively,” Prime Minister Drew said during the meeting at the CUNA Conference Center.

The national security minister noted that while the government will continue to provide all the necessary and reasonable support, the responsibility for fighting crime ultimately lies with the security forces, underscoring the urgency and importance for them to step up their efforts to protect and serve the people of the Federation.

“Our police officers are not just enforcers of the law; they are protectors of our communities. They are the ones who walk the streets, who know the neighbourhoods, who interact with the people. They are the ones who must lead the charge against crime, with the full backing of the government and the community,” Dr. Drew said, reiterating his administration’s commitment of support in this regard.

However, Prime Minister Dr. Drew stressed that meaningful success in the fight against crime will not and cannot be realised without the active participation of the entire community.

“Let us not forget that crime is not just a policing issue; it is a societal issue. It is rooted in a complex web of social, economic, and cultural factors that must be addressed if we are to achieve lasting peace. That is why your government is committed to a holistic approach to crime prevention—one that includes not only law enforcement but also education, community engagement, and social services,” said Prime Minister Drew.

Friday’s session allowed for stakeholders and representatives from church and religious institutions, political parties, sports associations, social clubs, private sector businesses, the government, and other community-based organisations to share their suggestions and insights regarding the current trend of violence and crime.

The valuable information gathered will be instrumental in guiding and shaping the agenda for the upcoming National Consultation on Citizen Security, which forms part of the 90-Day Campaign
