Official Handing Over of the ICT Network Project to the Ministry of Health
Basseterre, St. Kitts – June 5, 2024 [Ministry of Health] – The Ministry of Health proudly announces the official handing over of the ICT Network Project, a collaborative effort made possible by The Cable (Contractor) and the National Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (NTRC) through their Universal Service Fund (USF). This milestone marks the completion of a year-long project connecting all thirteen state-run institutions to a high-speed, high-bandwidth secure network.
The newly established network will significantly enhance healthcare services in St. Kitts and Nevis, enabling cutting-edge features such as telemedicine, the installation of a Hospital Digital Record (HDR) software, and other modern amenities that will elevate the level of care available to residents and citizens.
The official handing-over ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, who shared his vision for the future of healthcare in the Federation. In his remarks, Dr. Drew stated, “This advanced network is a game-changer for our healthcare system. It will allow us to provide timely and efficient care, especially for those in remote areas. The integration of telemedicine and digital health records will ensure that our citizens receive the highest standard of care, regardless of their location.”
The ceremony culminated in a live demonstration showcasing the network’s capabilities. A patient at the Cayon Health Centre reported their symptoms to a nurse, who then immediately contacted a specialist doctor at the JNF General Hospital for a consultation via an on-network video call. This demonstration highlighted the potential of the new network to improve patient care and streamline medical consultations.
In attendance were the Permanent Secretary (Acting) in the Ministry of Health, Mr. Curtis Martin, and H.E. Michael Lin, Ambassador to the Republic of China, Taiwan, a longstanding partner to the Ministry of Health. Representatives from The Cable, the local telecommunications company contracted to complete the project, were also present to witness this momentous occasion.
The ICT Network Project was funded to the amount of $3.3 million, reflecting the significant investment in the future of healthcare in St. Kitts and Nevis. The Ministry of Health extends its deepest gratitude to The Cable and the NTRC for their unwavering support and commitment to improving healthcare services in the Federation.
