On the forecast track, the center of Bret is expected to approach the Lesser Antilles on Thursday, June 22, 2023. Bret is expected to move across the island chain by Thursday evening into Thursday night, and then move westward across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24, 2023, respectively.
WIND: Tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning areas and possible within the watch areas by late Thursday, June 22, 2023.
SURF: Swells generated by Tropical Storm Bret are expected to begin affecting the Lesser Antilles on Thursday, June 22, 2023. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

RAINFALL: Storm total rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches with maximum amounts of 10 inches are possible across portions of the Lesser Antilles from Guadeloupe to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, including Barbados. The heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding, especially across areas of higher terrain. Urban flooding is also possible.
Due to the degree of uncertainty in track and intensity forecast, it is still a bit premature to specify the location and magnitude of the associated hazards. Regardless of development, all interests in the Lesser Antilles should closely monitor the progression of Tropical Storm Bret and take the necessary precautionary measures.
Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Actions
Actions undertaken by the CDEMA CU:
The CDEMA CU Contingency Plan and the Regional Coordination Plan (RCP) were activated at 5:00 PM, June 20, 2023.
The Chair of CDEMA Council and the CARICOM Secretary General have been briefed. The Regional Deployment Teams have been placed on ALERT as of 8:00 AM, June 21, 2023. The CDEMA Participating States (PSs) under Tropical Storm Watch and Warnings have been contacted. The CDEMA CU in collaboration with the Regional Security System (RSS) and the Barbados Defense
Force (BDF) facilitated the transport of 1000 cots from St. Vincent and the Grenadines to Dominica on June 19 – 20, 2023.
The Caribbean Development Partners Group (CDPG) convened a meeting of the regional partners at 1:00 PM, June 21, 2023.
The CDEMA CU in collaboration with the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) and the wider RRM Partners will continue to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Bret and provide updates, as necessary.
Updates from Participating States
In summary, the CDEMA Participating States under threat from Tropical Storm Bret reported:
Meetings of their respective National Disaster Management Organizations (NDMOs) were convened. National stakeholders provided briefs on their status of preparedness to their respective NDMOs. Press briefings were convened to relay preparedness actions and updates to the public. Increased messaging on storm, hurricane and floods were published via the Government Information Services (GIS) and other media platforms.
Continued monitoring of Tropical Storm Bret in collaboration with the National Meteorological Services.
Partner Updates
CDEMA’s Information Note # 3
The International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) continues to monitor the system along with its National Offices, particularly those under threat. Non-food items are being stored at the national and regional level.
PAHO’s offices in the region are continuing their readiness actions and continue to monitor the system.
UNICEF is coordinating with other UN Agencies and will coordinate with CDEMA where necessary and stands ready to support the RCC if it is activated.
The World Food Programme (WFP) continues to monitor the system and remains in contact with their colleagues in St. Vincent and Grenadines, Dominica and Saint Lucia. They have prepositioned supplies at the UN House in Barbados that can be easily deployed or transported.
