MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY HONOURABLE JOHN A. BRICEÑO, PRIME MINISTER OF BELIZE ON THE DEATH OF SIR MANUEL ESQUIVEL
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) notes with deep regret the passing of the former Prime Minister of Belize, the Rt. Honourable Sir Manuel Esquivel KCMG.
Sir Manuel’s calm presence allied to his measured statements were the hallmark of his contributions as a member of the Conference of Heads of Government. His well-earned reputation as a man of principle, honesty and integrity as well as his efforts at economic diversification endeared him to the people of Belize.
In paying tribute to Sir Manuel, the Community recalls his own words to the 1986 meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government:
“The most fitting epitaph we can inscribe to the memories of those Caribbean leaders who have dedicated their labours and their lives to the integration movement, is a promise to endure, to build on their achievements, and to be steadfast in our commitment to make the movement work for the States and the peoples of the Caribbean Community.”
This most aptly applies to Sir Manuel.
CARICOM extends deepest condolences to his wife Lady Kathy, his children, grandchildren, the entire Esquivel family, and to the Government and people of Belize on the loss of this exemplar to the nation and the Region.
