Ivan Hanley Removed from Solid Waste Management Corporation
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, 13 October, 2022 – Ivan Hanley has formally been removed as General Manager, Chairman and Secretary of the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) and its Board of Directors respectively.
In the interim, an Acting General Manager will be appointed while the new Board of the SWMC convenes on the matter.
Minister with responsibility of Solid Waste, Honourable Dr Joyelle Clarke said several instances of malpractice have been uncovered concerning the management of the accounts and the staff at SWMC.
Dr Clarke stated that the government has made a commitment to integrity and good governance. However, she said, part of this requires strategic transition of general managers which would not interrupt the governance at SWMC and not jeopardize the salaries or payments of any worker. As such, Dr Clarke noted that the transition of Ivan Hanley based on findings and investigations may have taken some time, but it was needed to ensure no missteps were taken.
Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr Terrance Drew, as well as Permanent Secretary, Sharon Rattan have met with the workers and management on separate occasions.
The matter will be passed on to the Attorney General, the Honourable Garth Wilkin to review for legal implications where persons were appointed without contract and also appointed with multiple roles by the former administration.
